WORK OBJECTIVE:
The Public Works Road Crew perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks that provide and sustain roads, drainage structures, equipment and services essential to the welfare and acceptable quality of life for the citizens of Potter Township. To perform this job successfully one must be able to perform the duties and tasks listed below. 

DUTIES AND TYPICAL TASKS:

Performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work in the maintenance of Township streets, roads, drainage ways, storm sewer network, equipment and other facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision throughout a typical 40-hour work week, shifts vary with the season. Some overtime work is required.

  • Meet with Public Works Superintendent or foreman at least once per day to get work orders and other pertinent information related to work assignments;
  • Discuss and ask questions about work assignments to better understand the job and your specific duties as part of the crew working on those assignments;
  • Collects leaves and brush by using various types of equipment;
  • Performs demolition work of concrete, and asphalt in preparation of replacement;
  • Performs concrete work to install curbing, sidewalks, and driveway aprons along streets and roads;
  • Performs work to install asphalt pavement on Township roadways;
  • Repairs cracks, potholes, and pavement edges of roadways;
  • Performs work to maintain storm sewer network, including pipe replacement, pre-cast inlet replacement, concrete forming and pouring;
  • Perform maintenance work within public right-of-way and Township property including mowing grass, tree trimming, and landscaping;
  • Performs snow removal and ice control activities during winter months including operation of plowing equipment and shoveling as required.
  • Assists with the maintenance and daily cleanliness of vehicles and equipment;
  • Performs work related to painting of pavement lines and markings on Township streets
  • Operates equipment including backhoe, front end loader, dump trucks, street sweeper, compactors, mowers, tractors and variety of other heavy equipment as well as powered hand tools;
  • Tasks of this job include physical activities including lifting, climbing, kneeling, standing, pulling, pushing, walking, and other repetitive motions;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Possess a general knowledge of road maintenance and construction techniques and methods;

Possess a general knowledge of equipment maintenance techniques;

Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions;

Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse weather conditions;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates;

Skilled in the use of a variety of hand tools and operation of motorized equipment;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug screening and criminal background and driver’s license check prior to employment. On-going alcohol and drug screening in accordance with the DOT and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
